The latest rumors surrounding the LG G4's successor, the G5, suggests that the upcoming flagship handset might come with a new security feature that's more advance than the fingerprint scanner.
According to various sources, the G5 might be able to recognize its owners through an iris scanning feature.
News about the G5's alleged eye recognition capabilities emerged after South Korean news site Who Wired reported that LG is currently closely working with biometrics firm Irience for the security features.
Based on the report, Irience, which specializes in iris scanning technology, has recently finished working on the feature's prototype for smartphones.
Using this hardware module, smartphones will be able to identify users based on their retinal scans within a range of 30 to 50 centimeters. This means that users do not have to press the handsets on their faces for the security feature to work.
They could just simply look at the device at a given distance and it will automatically unlock. If the device detects that a stranger is trying to access the device, it will remain locked, Tech Radar has learned.
Although Irience has already completed the module, it is still working on other technical aspects of the security feature such as its algorithm process. This indicates that the security feature will not be released in time for LG upcoming flagship phablet, the G4 Note.
Instead, LG will probably be able to integrate the Irience's iris scanner to its products during the first half of 2016, which is the rumored launch period of the G5.
If the rumors are true, and if all goes according to plan for the two Korean tech firms, then future G5 owners will be able to unlock and access their devices with their eyes. This feature could put LG ahead of its rivals that use fingerprint scanners for their flagship devices.
