Six people have already died due to defective airbags from Takata. Over 33.8 million airbags have been recalled by car companies in the United States for fear of untoward incidents.
The airbags, according to sources, shoot metal pieces into the car when they are deployed. Japanese automobile company, Honda, is also preparing for the massive recall that has made history. But Honda is not alone in this feat; there are almost 24 car makers that have used the defective airbags in their vehicles.
But apart from the hassle and the alarm the recall is causing, the government seems to be concerned on how it is performed. According to the NHTSA, manufacturers who are running their own recalls develop "a patch-work solution that NHTSA believes may not adequately address the safety risks."
And because of this, the NHTSA wants the government to step in.
"I would think that would be a disaster if the federal government did it. You've been on their site to check for a recall. It works sometimes and it doesn't work sometimes," Ed Voyles Honda general manager Pete Richards commented.
But the trouble is not limited to car manufacturers. Car owners who own models that are on the list for recalls are not so happy about how it is being handled.
"I tried to make an appointment for my car because of the recall and that's when they told me that there wasn't going to be any appointments available till November," Honda Civic 2002 owner Natalie Kubes said.
Drivers were told that it can take months to have their Takata airbags replaced. Millions are on the list, and delays can be inevitable. Car manufacturers are also trying to get their hands on airbag replacements, which are not available right away.
"We have ordered over probably 2,000 or 3,000 airbags at this point that are still on back order," Ashlee Speight of Honda of Oakland, Calif. said in an interview. She also mentioned that they might have an entire department working on just recalls due to the volume of requests.
