Which of the Weasley twins Fred and George was born first?
It wasn't specified in any of the seven Harry Potter novels written by J.K. Rowling, but the author thought that fans have it all figured out already.
When a fan asked this question on Twitter, Rowling had this to say: "Fred was born first. I always thought that was obvious!"
Some people think that the answer can be found based on their initials - F does come before G, after all. But some fans delved deeper and looked into the personalities of the twins, which in all accounts appear very similar.
However, Fred does seem to be more vocal compared to his brother George, and can often be seen speaking on behalf of his brother. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Hogwarts began to change drastically under the new headmistress, it was he who told the vile Professor Umbridge that they were leaving the school in order to start their own joke shop.
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he was the one who spoke up to Professor Dumbledore and said "You're joking!" when it was announced that the famed Triwizard Tournament would only be happening at Hogwarts due to some concerns. At the same time, he asked Angelina out to the Yule Ball by shouting his invitation across the room.
Fred's also demonstrated himself to be the louder of the Weasley twins. In Goblet of Fire, he was the one to call out "You're joking!" to Dumbledore, when the Hogwarts headmaster revealed to the school that the Triwizard Tournament was happening at Hogwarts. And he asked Angelina to the Yule Ball by shouting the request across the room.
But going back to the simple, "obvious" reasons - the way Rowling writes their names, it's always "Fred and George" and never "George and Fred," thereby establishing their line of succession.
Fred might be the first Weasley twin to come into this world, but he was also the first one to leave. In a heartbreaking twist, Fred was killed off during the Battle at Hogwarts, and Rowling has earlier admitted that he was the one character she regretted killing off.
Aside from Fred, other tragic deaths throughout the Harry Potter series include that of Harry Potter's godfather Sirius Black, his owl Hedwig, house elf Dobby, Professor Albus Dumbledore, Professor Severus Snape, as well as Tonks and Lupin.
