Classes will continue at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters as the ‘New Mutants’ movie is on its way to the big screen.

Fox announced last Wednesday that the studio will continue working towards building a comprehensive cinematic superhero universe by using an approach currently being used by rival Marvel Studios.

To reach out towards teen audiences, Fox has recruited director Josh Boone, who previously worked on the film adaptation of ‘The Fault in Our Stars, to co-write and take over the ‘X-Men’ spinoff. Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner have also signed on to the team as producers.

"We're so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe," Kinberg said in an official statement. "And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters."

Developed in 1982 by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, the story of ‘New Mutants’ focuses on younger counterparts of The X-Men. However, it remains unclear as to which members will be included in the upcoming movie.

Fan favorites such as Warpath (Boo Boo Stewart), Sunspot (Adan Canto) and Blink (Fan Bingbing) made an appearance in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, which was released last year.

The 1983 series picked up the original concept behind the ‘X-Men’ in which Professor Xavier meets and teaches a new class of super-powered students.

However, unlike the original X-Men, ‘New Mutants’ considerably extended its reach when it comes to choosing characters. In the original lineup, only one member of the New Mutants represented the traditional white American superhero, which was Sam Guthrie also known as Cannonball.

Alongside Guthrie's character were the native American Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage, the Vietnamese hero Xia'n Coy Manh aka Karma, the Brazilian protagonist Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot and the Scottish werewolf Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane, to name a few.

Other members of the team included Amara Aquilla known as Magma, who was raised in a secret society that followed the rules and principles of ancient Rome. The series also featured Illyana Rasputin aka Magik, who is well known to be the little sister of the X-Men's Colossus. They became the first new members of the team within two years of the series' launch.

Meanwhile in other parts of the X-Men universe, the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ has already been set for an official release in May next year.

The studio is also working on spinoff movies for ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Gambit’ in which Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum take on the leading roles, respectively.
