The first Star Wars Anthology series of spin-off films called Rogue One has just recruited Y Tu Mama Tambien and Elysium star Diego Luna to join, and he will be working with Felicity Jones and play a rebel soldier together with Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsoh. Meanwhile, Sam Claflin has been rumored to join as well.
According to Variety, Rogue One will follow the story of a rogue band of resistance fighters that have teamed up to steal the plans of Death Star and bring new hope to the galaxy.
"It's the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It's complicated, layered; a very rich scenario in which to set a movie," director Gareth Edwards said about it.
Moreover, Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic John Knoll will be executive producing the film together with Simon Emmanuel, known for his work on The Dark Knight Rises and Fast & Furious 6 and Jason McGatlin, of Tintin and War of the Worlds fame.
Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To, known for Band of Brothers and The Pacific will be producing with John Swartz of Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to co-produce.
Add to that, it has already been confirmed that Alexandre Desplat who also worked on The Grand Budapest Hotel and The King's Speech will be providing the score.
The story will be written by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, screenplay by Chris Weitz, and the characters by George Lucas.
Rogue One will be a sequel, according to Edwards, and will take place in the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, "before the dark times, before the Empire," and he has guaranteed that it will have a darker tone compared to the other Star Wars movies.
He added that directing the movie is very important to him, and he was first presented with the idea midway through working on Godzilla. He was so burned out working on the other film that he somehow hoped that he would not like the Star Wars project, even though he is a huge Star Wars fan. "Please be rubbish," he even said of the pitch, but once he read it, there was no turning back for the director.
"I couldn't sit in a cinema and know that someone else made this film," he admitted.
Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is set for release on December 16, 2016.
