After starring in blockbuster films such as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Interstellar’, Anne Hathaway now lands another leading role in the sci-fi movie ‘Colossal.’

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the award-winning actress has joined director Nacho Vigalondo’s newest movie, which has been described as “Godzilla meets Lost in Translation”.

Hathaway will take on the role of Gloria, the lead character who returns to her hometown after losing both her job and her fiance.

After hearing about reports of a giant lizard making assaults in Tokyo, Gloria comes to understand that she is able to connect with the creature using a psychic bond.

“In order to prevent further destruction,” the Hollywood Reporter said, “Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.”

After gaining fame and success with his 2007 time-travel thriller film ‘Timecrimes’, Vigolondo continues to venture out into technology-related film adaptation with his recent projects, such as ‘Open Windows’ starring Elijah Wood.

“Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations,” the Oscar-nominated Spanish filmmaker said.

Vigalondo has also worked on several horror anthology movies, such as the ‘Parallel Monsters’ segment on ‘V/H/S: Viral’ and the ‘A is for Apocalypse’ segment on ‘The ABCs of Death.’

With Voltage Pictures financing the project, CEO Nicolas Chartier has already shared his own sentiments in developing the film, referring to Vigalondo’s script as “an extraordinarily unique piece of material”, as he expressed in his official statement regarding ‘Colossal.’

Voltage has been known for funding distinct sci-fi stories, including Terry Gilliam’s dystopian film ‘The Zero Theorem’, as well as storylines that take on a more personal approach, such as ‘Don Jon’ and ‘Dallas Buyers Club.’

Meanwhile, Hathaway will make an appearance in the Nancy Meyers comedy film ‘The Intern’ in which she stars as the head of a fashion website who hires an intern, to be portrayed by Robert De Niro.

The 32-year-old actress will also star in Disney’s ‘Alice Through the Looking-Glass’, the sequel to ‘Alice in Wonderland’ that was released in 2010. The upcoming American fantasy film also stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans, and is set for an official release on May 27, 2016.
