The first Guardians of the Galaxy film which starred Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Dave Batista was an unexpected hit, so now director James Gunn is even more pressured to churn out an equally, if not more compelling sequel.
The director said that the plot is really different from the comic books. "It's not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it'll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that," he shared in Alison Rosen's podcast.
Gunn said that the sequel will enable audiences to learn a little bit more about the old characters as well as introduce them to new ones, who will become important figures in the Guardians story, and maybe even the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.
One of these is Peter Quill, also known as Star Lord's father named Yondu, who might possibly be played by Al Pacino. Gunn earlier teased that he's really excited about the sequel since it will introduce his favorite character, so Quill's mysterious father might just be it.
The sequel was actually given the green light as soon as the first movie came out, and Gunn talked to Marvel producers about his ideas for the next film. While they were all on board to support his plans for the sequel, they admitted that there is a chance that the sequel might shoot up in flames.
"They were like, 'Oh, whoa. That's risky, but okay.' Now I'm going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we'll find out how well it works," he said.
Gunn also shared that the story of Guardians is "all about families" so they will also focus on the relationship Gamora has with her sister Nebula.
When they created the first movie, Gunn said that their hands were actually tied since they had to introduce a lot of characters within a short amount of time. But now that they have already accomplished that, it is now time for them to "have a good time and have fun" in the sequel.
The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel has been scheduled for release on May 5, 2017.
