ABC Family has found its Clary Fray, the female lead in the upcoming series ‘Shadowhunters.’ Katherine McNamara is set to join the ‘Mortal Instruments’ drama alongside Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon and Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood.

McNamara previously appeared in the feature film ‘New Year’s Eve’ and will star next in the upcoming ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.’ She also scored a role on ABC Family’s hit series ‘The Fosters’ to be aired this summer.

Based on the young adult fantasy book series ‘The Mortal Instruments’, the story of ‘Shadowhunters’ revolves around the experiences of Clary Fray.

After turning 18, she finds out that her own family tree is filled with Shadowhunters- creatures deemed as half humans and half angels, and whose mission mainly involves hunting down demons.

Following the disappearance of her mother, Clary spends more time demon hunting alongside Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon.

Sharing her environment with vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures, Clary now goes on a journey to discover more about her past, present and future.

According to ABC Family executive vice president Karey Burke, Clary should be acknowledged for her strength and persistence, hence an appealing character that viewers can easily identify with.

“They will want her to succeed and will root for her on her journey to become who she was always meant to be,” Burke stated. “The series has a passionate fan base and an expansive universe that can sustain multiple seasons to come.”

Meanwhile, as Clary’s best friend, Simon will join her as they hunt down demons while his loyalty and even his feelings for her will be tested.

Two Shadowhunters will be easily recognized in the ‘Mortal Instruments’ drama- Jace and Isabelle. Jace can be associated with expert skill and experience when it comes to fighting demons. Similarly, Isabelle can be expected to be a highly capable female Shadowhunter.

Constantin Film has been set to produce while Ed Decter has signed on as showrunner and executive producer.

‘Shadowhunters’ is expected to be comprised of 13 episodes whereas its production will start this May in Toronto. A premiere date is yet to be announced.

“’Shadowhunters’ is a big epic saga that will resonate with viewers who come to ABC Family for the ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Hunger Games,’ and ‘Twilight’ franchises,” ABC Family President Tom Ascheim shared.
