Another superhero is set to dominate the small screen as CBS' Supergirl has been given the green light to air its pilot for the 2015-2016season.
According to TV Guide, the series will star Melissa Marie Benoist, best known for her role as Marley Rose in Glee seasons four and five. She will be playing Kara Zor-El, born from the planet Krypton. She managed to escape Krypton as it was being destroyed and take refuge on Earth.
Since she was a little girl, Kara has tried her best to hide her powers, which are similar to that of her famous cousin Superman. But now that she has turned 24, events have prompted Kara to embrace her superhero qualities and act as a savior for mankind.
The series Supergirl will also star Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as James "Jimmy" Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, and Robert Gant as Zor-El.
It is directed by Glenn Winter, while the script is written by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, who are also the show's producers together with Andrew Kreisberg, Sarah Schechter, and Michael Cedar.
Supergirl is the newest series with a superhero and comic book theme, such as ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, CW's Arrow, The Flash, and iZombie, Fox's Gotham, and NBC's Constantine.
Meanwhile, Benoist has already appeared in several television shows apart from Glee, such as Homeland, Law & Order, Blue Bloods, and The Good Wife. She has even ventured into the big screen with movies such as Tennessee, Whiplash, and most recently, Danny Collins, where she will play Jamie, a desk clerk working in a hotel where frequented by one of her favorite rock stars. The movie also stars Jennifer Garner, Al Pacino, and Annette Bening. Her other movie projects include The Longest Ride and Billy Boy.
Kara El-Zor, or Supergirl, will be her biggest role to date.
On the personal front, Benoist is currently engaged to her Glee co-star Blake Jenner, who played her on-screen love interest Ryder Flynn. The two have been dating since 2012, and finally announced their engagement on July 11, 2013.
Incidentally, it is her fiancé Jenner who wrote Billy Boy, and the two went on online fundraising website Kickstarter to get help to make the film a reality. As of December 11, 2013, they reached their $100,000 goal and they started filming on July 14, 2014. The film will be released this year.
