If director Joss Whedon only had his way, then web-slinging superhero Spider-Man and Captain Marvel would have been included in the Avengers: Age of Ultron line-up.

But certain technicalities and agreements had to be observed, and Whedon was forced to pull them out. This is what the director revealed during an interview with the Empire podcast.

"I was like, 'And Spider-Man, we could include him in Avengers 2 also, cause Sony had approached us during the first movie about a little integration," he shared. "So I would have put both Captain Marvel and Spider-Man in, but neither of the deals were made. And then they were like, 'We're making a Captain Marvel movie and we've got Spider-Man as a property,' and I'm like, 'I've already locked my film! Thanks for nothing.'"

The first Avengers movie and The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield first came out in 2012, and there have been talks between Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony about including Oscorp Tower in the New York City skyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But alack and alas, a deal could not be made in time for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Fans desperate to see their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the big screen again need not fret though, since Marvel Cinematic Universe does has big plans for him. He will be making an appearance in Chris Evans' solo film Captain America: Civil War, so people will see him go in action with the Cap and Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, also known as Tony Stark.

He will also be getting his own solo movie in 2017. Since he's included in Marvel Studio's long-term plans, he will most definitely be included in The Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2.

Unfortunately, Garfield will no longer be donning Spidey's mask, since Marvel wants to turn back the clock and tell the story of a much younger Peter Parker. There has been a rumor going on that Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield and In the Heart of the Sea actor Tom Holland are in the lead to nab the highly coveted role.

However, Butterfield is set to star in Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, so there might be some conflict in shooting dates, and it will all depend on when they wrap up filming.

The studio might lean more on Butterfield because between him and Holland, he is a more accomplished actor already, but Holland's star has been on a slow and steady rise and great things are expected of him.
