Following the considerable success of the '21 Jump Street’ franchise, Sony is reportedly planning to expand its universe by incorporating a female spin on an upcoming movie.

As reported by The Wrap, the studio has looked into hiring writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, who is widely known for working on the critically acclaimed sitcom ‘Broad City’, to pen the script for the female ’21 Jump Street’ film.

Sony reportedly aims to expand its franchise in the similar manner that the ‘Ghostbusters’ universe has been broadened.

Helmed by Paul Feig, the all-women ‘Ghostbusters’ movie will star Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, and will be released first among the other related movies to follow, such as another male-fronted reboot.

In addition, Sony is also said to be developing a new ‘Men in Black’ film whose story will have a crossover with ’21 Jump Street’, and will include Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in its cast. It has not yet been announced as to whether this story will be turned into the confirmed sequel titled ’23 Jump Street’ or will be created separately.

Co-director Philip Lord was asked as to how the team would handle the fake sequels that were dropped at the ending of ’22 Jump Street.’

“We’ve found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet,” Lord shared at WonderCon this month.

The directing team of Lord and Christopher Miller, who took over “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street,” are currently helming the third film and overseeing the script’s development. They have also been set to produce ’23 Jump Street’ along with Neal Moritz, Hill and Tatum.

In another interview with The New York Times, the director explained that they have found a scriptwriter who they expect will come up with impressive ideas and turn these into actual scenes that will lead to the next film’s story.

“Rodney Rothman is off writing a script. He had a really outrageous idea for what to do, and how we could take our scorched-earth sequel policy from the end of 22 Jump Street and do something that hadn’t been explored in those 22 sequels and simultaneously tell the next chapter in the story,” Lord stated.
