Following the success of ‘Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods’ as well fan’s anticipation for the upcoming ‘Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F’, it was announced by Toei Animation that they have begun their work on a follow-up to these films, particularly a brand new ‘Dragon Ball’ television series.

After 18 years, the highly popular animated series has been set to return to the small screen. Titled ‘Dragon Ball Super’, the newest content in the franchise will make its debut this July in Japan.

Following the story of the series’ original characters, ‘Dragon Ball Super’ will focus on the events that come about after Goku’s battle with Majin Buu as he seeks to maintain peace and order on Earth.

Helmed by the series’ original creator Akira Toriyama and produced by Fuji Television, the new ‘Dragon Ball’ TV series will also incorporate elements from its previous stories to generate a new, dynamic universe that is appealing to both fans and new viewers.

“Having loved Dragon Ball since childhood, it is very exciting to be a part of this project,” Fuji Television producer Osamu Nozaki shared. “Mr. Toriyama has developed a plot that’s not only a dream come true for Dragon Ball’s millions of fans, but one that will foster in a new generation of viewers.”

The 78-year-old Masako Nozawa, who voiced the characters Goku, Gohan and Goten, will reportedly reprise her roles.

There have been limited details about the series so far; however, it will put forward the first new ongoing series in the franchise since the airing of ‘Dragon Ball GT’ in the ‘90s. ‘Dragon Ball Kai’, a revised version of the ‘Dragon Ball Z’, was also aired in 2009.

After being introduced in ‘Weekly Shonen Jump’ as a manga in 1984, ‘Dragon Ball’ eventually transformed into an internationally recognized brand. Viewed in over 70 countries with more than 230 million its comic books sold, ‘Dragon Ball’ has become one of the most beloved animated series of all time.

“We look forward to carrying on Dragon Ball’s tremendous legacy, bringing audiences a brand new Dragon Ball with the same sense of heart and commitment that went into past Dragon Ball productions,” Atsushi Kido, producer for Toei Animation, said in an official statement.

‘Dragon Ball Super’ will debut on Fuji TV in July and is scheduled at 9 a.m. on Sundays.
