Snapchat Inc. made three major updates to the instant messaging application on Monday, April 6, 2015. The app allows users to take and send photos, videos, texts, and drawings to friends. “Snaps” are photos and videos sent to recipients. “Snaps” are visible for one to ten seconds and then are permanently deleted. Snapchat revealed that 700 million “Snaps” were being sent daily in 2014. The app's mascot is Ghostface Chillah, the white ghost-like image as seen on the app icon's bright yellow background. The app was developped by CEO Evan Spiegel and his Stanford University classmates Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown. Snapchat's net worth is estimated to be $10 billion. That is $7 billion more than what Facebook placed as a bid for the company back in 2013.
Here are 3 Things to Know about the Update:
1. Emojis that re-define your friendships
Previously, Snapchat utilized the “Best Friends” list to show who users snapped with most frequently. Snapchat replaced that with Friend Emojis. Friend Emojis reveal users’ friendship levels based on codes that calculate how frequently a user sends “Snaps" to their friends.
2. Low-light Camera Settings
Users can turn on or turn off a low-light camera setting by clicking on the “Moon” icon. Using the “Moon” icon, will brighten up future “Snaps” when users are in the dark. It made Snapchat useful when the lights are off, at concerts, during night-time, and for camping.
3. Friendly “Snaps” Reminders
Snapchat has a “Needs Love” feature that inform users of people they have not snapped in a while. "Needs Love” is a new list that appears right under the list of “Recents (people you have snapped with most recently).”
