As ‘Game of Thrones’ fans continue to wait for the completion of the sixth book in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series, author George R.R. Martin has already begun a new project.
A new TV series for HBO titled ‘Captain Cosmos’ is already being developed with Martin as series creator. The show will follow the account of a “visionary young writer who creates a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell," Entertainment Weekly reports.
In 2013, following the considerable success of ‘Game of Thrones’ as the most watched program in HBO history, the award-winning author bagged a two-year development deal with the network to come up with a new series.
While Martin has spent much of his time finishing the highly-anticipated novel ‘The Winds of Winter’, he also developed the idea for ‘Captain Cosmos.’ As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the setting for the new series will be “at the dawn of the age of TV in 1949."
Still in its initial stages, ‘Captain Cosmos’ also has ‘Eerie, Indiana’ executive producer Michael Cassutt on board to write the pilot script. Cassutt previously worked with the ‘Game of Thrones’ writer in the 1995 reboot of ‘The Outer Limits.’
Martin has had a comprehensive history in television as he previously worked on the revival of ‘The Twilight Zone’ in 1985 and on the “Beauty and the Beast” series starring Ron Perlman in 1987.
A formal announcement for ‘Captain Cosmos’ will still be made by HBO. As ‘Game of Thrones’ season five is expected to have its premiere this month, Martin also emphasized the relevance of completing ‘The Winds of Winter’ before the sixth season arrives in 2016.
"I wish it was out now," Martin told EW. "Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish.”
Despite contributing to the concept of ‘Captain Cosmos’, Martin will not be committing ample time to the new project as he recently announced his cancellation of several public appearances to finish the sixth book in the ‘ASOIAF’ series. The previous novel, ‘A Dance With Dragons’, was published in 2011.
According to ‘Game of Thrones’ producers, the upcoming fifth season will already reveal spoilers from the book series before the seventh book is published.
The fifth season of “Game of Thrones” is set to premiere on April 12 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
