Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, responded to the report about Netflix adapting the video game franchise "The Legend of Zelda" for a live action television series.
According to the executive, the report was based on inaccurate information.
The report Iwata was referring to was an article released by the Wall Street Journal in February of this year regarding Netflix's latest project.
The news site claimed that an insider who has knowledge of the matter revealed that the online video streaming service was already in the first stages of production for the "Zelda" television series and was in need of script writers for the project.
According to the report, the program will follow the story of the video game franchise and focus on the protagonist Link as he goes on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda. The source noted that Netflix was hoping to release the "Zelda" television program as a family-friendly version of HBO's "Game of Thrones."
The Wall Street Journal asked Netflix about the alleged project but the company refused to comment on it. In a recent interview with Time, however, Iwata clarified the rumors about the live action adaptation of the popular Nintendo game.
"As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films," the company president told Time.
"But I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information," Iwata added.
Although the executive said that the report was inaccurate, the gaming news site Game Spot pointed out that Iwata did not directly confirm that a production project based on the "Legend of Zelda" games is not in the works.
Due to the vagueness of his statements, it could mean that such a project does exist but could possibly be presented differently or have a new storyline.
