Drake told his fans that he had no part in the production of the film, "Drake's Homecoming: The Lost Footage."
Drake, international rap artist, is being sued by Specticast, the distributor of the ‘Drake’s Homecoming: The Lost Footage’ film.
Specticast filed a lawsuit against Drake on Wednesday over libel in his latest Tweets concerning the film. Drake informed millions of Twitter followers on Monday that he has no part in “Drake’s Homecoming: The Lost Footage.”
The film is made from footages of Drake’s 2009 performance in Toronto, Canada. This was before he was discovered and introduced to Lil Wayne, CEO of Young Money Entertainment.
“The Drake Homecoming film is not something OVO or Drake have any part in. I feel it is my responsibility to inform and protect my fans,” Drake tweeted on Monday. Since then, his tweet has gotten 6,144 retweets and 10.3 K favorites on his Twitter account, @Drake.
Executive producers of the film are J. Prince and Jas Prince of Rap-a-Lot Records. Co-executive producer of the film is Attack Media chairman Mark Berry. Berry has voiced that Drake signed a contract for the film and should honor that contract.
The film is an edited two hour length movie composed of recordings from the year 2009. It also features interviews by J. Prince and Jas Prince. It refers to a show that Drake performed prior to his fame in the music industry. Aubrey Graham, Drake’s alias, signed a contract and received $15,000 in cash along with a promise of 15% in royalties for the filming of his concert. After Drake’s concert, he was signed onto Young Money Entertainment. After signing with the label, Drake became a Grammy award-winning artist.
The controversy behind the film are allegations that Jas Prince discovered Drake and therefore deserves royalties from Drake’s fortune. It contradicts the common knowledge of fans and media that Drake was first discovered by Lil Wayne.
Futhermore his latest Tweet on Tuesday states, “James Prince and I stand together on not supporting the Drake Homecoming footage in theatres. #protectingthefans.”
In an interview with the Rolling Stone Magazine, Berry stated, “It’s a money issue, but it’s also an issue where Drake lost control of this project a long, long time ago. We resurrected it. We developed the interest and put the partners together. He doesn’t have any control over it, so it’s a bit of a ‘sour grapes’ scenario.”
Thursday, March 19 was the release date for the film. It premiered for one night only in movie theaters across the U.S.
