For four straight seasons, those who read George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novel series have been so confident about the show's outcome that they were able to anticipate several shocking scenes, such as the beheading of Lord Eddard Stark and the massacre of his wife and son Caitlyn and Robb during The Red Wedding.

But now, Game of Thrones season five will be breaking free from the book's storyline, and the author has teased fans that no character is safe from the series, and that characters who survived in the book may not fare so well in the show.

So will favourite characters such as Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Khaleesi, Sansa Stark, and Khaleesi die in the upcoming season?

The two trailers provided by HBO have so far revealed that Sansa, played by Sophie Turner, would be undergoing major changes in the new season. She seems to be a stronger character now as she travels back to Winterfell with a number of guards from the House Arryn. She is accompanied by Littlefinger, played by Aidan Gillen in her journey back home.

Sansa is seen paying respects to the dead as she travels through the crypts of Winterfell with a candle in her hands.

The Christian Times noted that this scene is quite a departure from the books, since Sansa is still in the Vale and never made her way back to Winterfell in the book A Dance with Dragons. There is a possibility that Sansa meets then later marries Theon, played by Alfie Allen, or even his current master Ramsay, played by Iwan Rheon. In the books though, Jeyne Poole suffers through marriage with the evil Ramsay.

Sansa might also take on the role of Wyman Manderly. In the books, Wyman cooks several Frey men into pies then serves the dishes during Ramsay's wedding.

Meanwhile, Melissandre played by Carice van Houten is determined to sacrifice royal blood in order to ensure the success of Stannis played by Stephen Dillane, and she has set eyes on his daughter Shireen played by Tara Fitzgerald. However, Jon Snow played by Kit Harrington arrives just in time to save Shireen.

At King's Landing, Cersei Lannister played by Lena Headey is still mourning the death of her son and accuses her daughter in law Margery played by Natalie Dormer of having an incestuous relationship.

The fifth season of Game of Thrones will begin on Sunday, April 12 at 9 p.m. ET.
