Massachusetts-based studio Harmonix announced that it is working on developing "Rock Band 4" for Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles.

According to the company, the latest installment in the "Rock Band" game franchise will arrive for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sometime in 2015, Game Spot reported.

Aside from a new game, Harmonix is also working on creating new instrument-shaped controllers such as guitars, drums and microphones. The studio noted that members of the development team are currently looking for ways on how to make old "Rock Band" controllers work with the latest title release.

As for those who own DLCs and content updates for previous "Rock Band" games released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, Daniel Sussman, the product manager for Harmonix, said these will still run for "Rock Band 4" for next-gen platforms.

"We have been working with Sony and Microsoft to support legacy entitlements, so that DLC you bought on the PS3 will carry forward to the PS4, and same with the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One," the executive said in a statement according to Game Spot.

Sussman then clarified that the development of "Rock Band 4" for the next-gen consoles does not mean that Harmonix will continue to release follow-up titles for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. He emphasized that the main focus of the company is to expand the content of "Rock Band 4" through updates and DLCs, according to Engadget.

"At this point, in addition to DLC expansions, we're thinking of 'Rock Band 4' more as an ongoing platform model where it can incrementally accrete new functionality over time instead of doing big $60 title releases," Sussman said in the release.

The "Rock Band" game series began in 2007 with the release of its first installment for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii consoles. The latest release in the series, "Rock Band 3," debuted in 2010.
