The first three films of Toy Story are truly works of art that have touched the hearts of both kids and adults alike. The stories of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of Andy's toys have managed to stick to people's hearts in a way no other cartoon could, so Toy Story 4 would have really big shoes to fill if they decide to continue the lovable cast's story.
But Pixar President Jim Morris has told Disney Latino that the fourth instalment would no longer be a follow-up to the last film, and instead focus on being a love story. The story is still in developmental phase, but it has already been guaranteed that the fourth film will stand on its own.
"The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. I think this movie is not part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued. Never begin a project with that in mind," he said.
"It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. Temporarily, it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy, but it will not focus much on the interaction between the characters and children," he said.
Cinema Blend believes that the love story will be about Bonnie, the young girl who got all of Andy's toys in the last film before he went to college. And while an animated love story sounds pretty exciting, fans of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang might be disappointed not to see their favourite characters again.
The first three movies dealt mostly with friendship and family, and the new love story, according to Morris, is "evolving very well," revealed Film.
He stressed that they are not making Toy Story 4 to make money. Morris explained that they came up with an "irresistible" idea so "the decision to make a second or third installment entirely depends on how passionate the director of the project is."
John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich came up with the story, and Rashida Jones and Will McCormack will be writing the script. Jones and McCormack are new to Pixar but not to love stories, since they are the ones behind the script of Celeste and Jesse Forever.
Toy Story 4 has been scheduled for release on June 16, 2017.
