The fact that musical sensation Lady Gaga will be joining American Horror Story season five's Hotel took the world by surprise, but it really should have been expected already since the clues creator Ryan Murphy left on season four's Freak Show pertains to the singer.
EW just explained that the mysterious top hot clue is in fact linked to the singer. The top hat image made its appearance in the paper cup handed over to Maggie Esmeralda, the character played by Emma Roberts in Freak Show.
And while the clue is all about the 1935 film Top Hat, which is set in a hotel, it is also linked cleverly to Lady Gaga! The song "Cheek to Cheek" was written for the movie Top Hat and it is also the title of the singer's current duets album with Tony Bennett.
Murphy did say that fans will be surprised when the clue finally sinks in and makes sense. "That is a big season 5 clue!" he told EW last October about Top Hat. "It's an arcane clue, but it's very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you'll be like, 'Oh!'"
Little is known about Lady Gaga's character in Hotel, but Murphy and Brad Falchuk have been talking about it since last fall. The agreement was that if the right role was made for her, then she's all set to star in the show.
The news was pretty exciting but everybody who knew about it kept it a secret, including alum Sarah Paulson, who has been with the show from seasons one to four.
She did tell Vulture after the news broke out that it was "amazing" for the show to land Lady Gaga. "I think nothing in the world could be more exciting," she said.
The actress wishes to be a part of Hotel as well, but no further news about Hotel's cast has been confirmed. "I just feel like letting Ryan know that I am available, if he wants me," Paulson added.
Lady Gaga, who has appeared in movies such as Machete Kills (2013) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) made the announcement of Hotel on her Twitter page on February 25. She posted a video and it in she was donning a black costume. She later took it off and said in a husky voice, "American Horror Story season five: Hotel."
