Fans of the Jem and the Holograms cartoon series from the 80s are in for a treat, since Universal Pictures just announced that they will be making a movie reboot of the beloved cartoon, which is slated for release on October 23 this year.
They recently revealed a hi-res image of the girls in action, according to Screen Rant, and they all look like wild 80s flashbacks. The actresses who will breathe life into the old cartoon characters are Hayley Kiyoko, who will play guitarist Aja, Aubrey Peeples who will be lead singer Jem, Stephanie Scott will be keyboardist Kimber, and Aurora Perrineau will be the drummer Shana.
Others included in the cast are Ryan Guzman, who will be Rio Pacheco, the girls' road manager and technical engineer. He is also the boyfriend of Jerrica Benton, the alter-ego of Jem. Reports have it that Molly Ringwald will play Mrs. Bailey and Juliette Lewis will be Erica Raymond.
Nicholas Braun will play Brad, Isabella Kai Rice will be the young Jerrica, Nathan Moore will be Zipper, and Barnaby Carpenter will be Emmett.
The movie's official synopsis reads: "As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures' Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice."
It adds that Jem and her sisters will go on a "music-driven scavenger hunt" in order to find the final message that was sent by Jem's father.
However, there are no talks yet about a major character in the series - Synergy, the holographic computer program Jem's father created that gave the girls the jumpstart to their careers.
Much excitement has also been placed on the girls who will play the characters from rival band The Misfits, and fans are wondering if they will even be included in the movie reboot.
The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who has also handled G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the Step Up movies and two 3D Justin Bieber documentaries. The script is written by Ryan Landels.
It was Chu together with music producer Scooter Braun and movie producer Jason Blum who thought of rebooting Jem and the Holograms.
The original series ran from 1985 to 1988 with a total of 65 episodes.
