24-year-old Joey Logano, a native of Middletown, Connecticut, emerged from his No. 22 Team Penske car as the winner of NASCAR's 2015 Daytona 500, according to ESPN.
He snatched the victory from 2007 Daytona 500 winner Kevin Harvick and veteran race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Named as one of the youngest winners of the famous race, Logano celebrated his victory on Sunday while still clutching his car's steering wheel in his left hand.
His victory came after HScott Motorsports driver Justin Allgaier's car spun out and wrecked on the track, prompting a caution flag to be raised. As the race restarted, Logano took the lead followed by Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin.
Harvick and Earnhardt Jr. weaved through the other cars in an attempt to take the lead from Logano when another wreck occurred behind them during the final lap of the race. This caused officials to raise another caution flag which ended the event.
After looking back at the racetrack and seeing the flag, Logano immediately knew that he had just won the Daytona 500, Fox Sports reported.
"I saw them crash in the mirror but I had a distance to go and I thought that was good because it was still going to be harder for them to catch up without as many cars in the pack," he told reporters after the event.
"Then the caution came out anyway," Logano continued. "That feeling of winning the Daytona 500, I can't explain how cool this is. I said in an interview that this was our worst race track last year and we worked really hard to figure out how we could get better at it and all the hard work got us the win today."
Last Sunday's win marked the second Daytona 500 victory for Team Penske, according to USA Today. The first trophy for the team was earned by former driver Ryan Newman in 2008. Newman also competed in the recent Daytona 500 in the No. 31 car for Richard Childress Racing.
