Canadian actress Katheryn Winnick already plays a tough Viking wife in the hit television series Vikings, so it's no problem for the actress to transition to another powerful female role in the big screen.
During an interview with IGN, Winnick welcomed the idea and expressed enthusiasm in playing Carol Danvers in Marvel Studio's upcoming Marvel movie.
Danvers is considered as Marvel's first female superhero, and has the ability to fly and absorb and project energy. She also has superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and durability.
When Winnick was asked how she feels about playing Danvers or any other comic book movie roles, her eyes lit up. "I would love to. Oh wow, there's so many. I'm such a fan of comic books. I grew up reading them. They were my idols! Like, these characters came to life for me! I don't think there's one in particular, other than I would love to play an action hero," she said.
She added that she would happily answer the phone and say yes right away if Marvel offered her a role. It would be an added benefit for the movie if the actress playing the lead role is already a fan of the character, and it would probably give a more convincing portrayal.
Winnick also shared about her experiences playing Lagertha Lothbrok in Vikings, another strong character she has fallen in love with. She said that playing the character Lagertha gave her the opportunity to "kick ass and get to deal with real human emotion."
Vikings is now in its third season and continues to gain a larger fan base. Lagertha's role has grown since the first season, when all she wanted was to be a dutiful wife and give her husband sons.
Coincidentally, Winnick posted a piece of fan art on her Instagram account last November, featuring her dressed in the Captain Marvel costume. The fan art looked very impressive and would definitely give Marvel something to consider.
Should she be chosen for the role of Captain Marvel, Winnick can probably work around her Vikings schedule, and there's always the possibility that her character might be killed off even before Captain Marvel starts its production stage.
Other actresses being considered for the role of Captain Marvel include Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, The Devil Wears Prada) and Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty), but casting announcements won't be made until 2016 or 2017.
Captain Marvel has been scheduled for release on November 2, 2018.
