Sony announced through PlayStation's Twitter page that the online support for the PlayStation Portable-exclusive "Resistance: Retribution" will be discontinued on May 5 of this year, Polygon reported.

The cancellation of the game's multiplayer feature echoes the same state that the online modes of other "Resistance" titles underwent in the previous years. On Tuesday, Sony took to Twitter to update gamers regarding what will happen to "Resistance: Retribution" in the coming months.

"Update: Online services for PSP title 'Resistance: Retribution' will be discontinued as of May 5th, 2015," the company tweeted. "Thanks for playing!"

Sony did not provide an official statement regarding its decision to pull out its online support for the game. However, in 2014, the company also disabled the online mode for the three major titles in the "Resistance" game series.

As pointed out by PlayStation Lifestyle, the reason behind Sony's decision to discontinue the games' online features is due to the series' low volume of fans. In fact, after the company tweeted the announcement for "Resistance: Retribution," a number of Twitter users responded and said they never played the game.

On May, once the game's online mode has been cancelled, the only "Resistance" game that will have an existing online feature will be "Resistance: Burning Skies" for Sony's PlayStation Vita.

"Resistance: Retribution" debuted in March of 2009. It was exclusively released for the PlayStation Portable and was developed by Sony's Bend Studio, the creator of the stealth-themed game series, "Syphon Filter." The studio also developed two "Uncharted" games for the PlayStation Vita.

The story of the game takes place between the events of "Resistance: Fall of Man" and "Resistance 2." The game is a third-person shooter and follows the protagonist James Grayson, a lieutenant on the British Royal Marines. Grayson goes around Europe battling an alien race known as the Chimera.

The game's multiplayer mode can support up to eight players and features various matches such as Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Containment, Assimilation and Free for All.
