James Gunn, the director of the blockbuster film Guardians of the Galaxy, does not seem to mind threading the dangerous path of altering the storylines of comic book superheroes to cater to the demands of big screen fans, as reported in Screen Rant.

Unbeknownst to the majority of moviegoers, particularly those who watched the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn pursued a different direction to tackle the superhero story composed of a team of supposed misfits. Instead of endeavoring to remain faithful to the comic book plot, the director opted to tweak the scenes and provide more depths to characters.

In a podcast interview aired in the site called Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend, Gunn shared that the idea to alter the storyline for the sequel was "not really based on anything." He explained that the plot was an original story he came up when he commenced his work for the first film.

Gunn disclosed that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will "answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that."

Gunn also revealed that the sequel will allow the audience to "get to know some of the characters a little bit more." More importantly, he shared that fans and followers of the film will be able "to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole."

During the interview, Gunn pointed out once more that Peter Quill's father revealed in the comic books will be different from that in the film. This decision to veer away not only from the original storyline but also from the cast of characters was pushed by the director following the studio's go signal for a sequel.

"I went in and I sat down with those guys and I'm like, 'Okay, here's what I think the sequel should be.' And they were like, 'Oh, whoa. That's risky, but okay.' Now I'm going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we'll find out how well it works," Gunn shared.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will feature the same members of the cast, namely, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, and Bradley Cooper. The film is set for release to theaters on May 5, 2017.
