Taylor Swift has made a huge headline when it comes to her reign on the Billboard 200, with her ‘1989’ album claiming the top spot for the 10th non-consecutive week. This places the ‘Shake It Off’ singer in the same company of music artists who have had albums holding the top spot for more than 10 weeks.
Swift’s ‘Fearless’ in 2008 also soared to the top of the Billboard charts and triumphed over the rest for 11 weeks.
A fellow female artist who achieved similar chart-topping reigns is Whitney Houston, who reigned the Billboard charts three times. The ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer’s self-titled debut album in 1986 stayed put at number one for 14 weeks.
‘Whitney’ from 1987 also reigned at 11 weeks whereas her contributing soundtrack to ‘The Bodyguard’ took over the top spot for over 20 weeks in 1992 and 1993.
Billboard reported that Swift and Houston are two of only seven music artists who have been able to have multiple albums reign at the top spot for more than 10 weeks. The Beatles managed to top the charts four times while the Kingston Trio did it three times. The Monkees and Henry Mancini made such achievement twice.
Unfortunately for the other albums in the Top 10, they have not been able to go beyond the 100,000 sales mark. Only one album was able to land a spot in the top 10- Ne-Yo’s ‘Non-Fiction.’ By selling 59,000 copies, the 32-year-old singer’s sixth studio album ranks number five, just one spot higher than Fall Out Boy’s ‘American Beauty/American Psycho’ which was at number one last week.
When it comes to the Singles chart, ‘Uptown Funk’ by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars retains the top spot with an additional 36,500 downloads from last week. With the popularity of this single, it helped boost Ronson’s ‘Uptown Special from the tenth spot last week to the seventh.
Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj’s ‘The Pinkprint’ stepped down from number six to number eight with 48,000 units while Maroon 5’s ‘V’ entered the top 10 and claimed the number nine spot with its 43,000 unit overhaul.
The compilation album for the 2015 Grammy Nominees rounded up the chart-topping albums at number ten as it stays in the Billboards for its second week. It has become the 14th Grammy Nominees album to enter the top 10 of the Albums chart.
