The release of the new Red Velvet Oreos has been officially confirmed. The limited edition version of the well-loved chocolate cookie will be featuring the highly popular red velvet flavor with a cream cheese center. This latest addition to the Oreo brand will be out by February 2, 2015, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

"We knew there was a lot of love out there for the flavor red velvet and for OREO, so we asked ourselves, why not combine the two?" shared Janda Lukin, the senior director for the North America unit of the Deerfiled-based Mondelez International company. "It's something that's classic, but I think what people have done in the last several years is reinterpret it."

Meanwhile, the fans of the brand who could no longer wait to get their hands on this new variant of their favorite cookie have the chance to taste it ahead of the public by joining a contest at the http://www.OREORedVelvetRope.com. The few fortunate participants, which will reach a total of 20,250 Oreo fanatics, will be granted the opportunity to taste the new sumptuous cookie before its official public debut in February.

"Usually there are two sides to a velvet rope: the fun side and the sorry-you-can't-play-with-us side. But we're all about having fun everywhere, with everyone. So, we've decided to pull back the rope on our latest limited edition flavor- Red Velvet- and give everyone a chance to taste the newest (and reddest) OREO cookies before they even hit shelves," announced the brand in their page.

However, some fans did not fully appreciate the new flavor experiment of Oreo. "The crème is super, super sweet and doesn't taste as much like traditional cream cheese frosting as I expected. It also feels softer than usual cookie cream? Creamier? In a blind taste test I don't think I would have pegged it for red velvet flavor, but I would have known that they were "different." I now really want a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting," commented one taste test participant from BuzzFeed.com.

Apart from the first tasters in Buzzfeed, some employees from USA Today were also given the opportunity to taste the product ahead of everyone else. Some feedback echoed the comment given by one of the employees from Buzzfeed.

"The cookie itself is good but the creme is too strong," remarked Senior Product Manager Sarah Schmalbach. Meanwhile, Anne Willette, a news editor from the team, felt that the red velvet version of the brand was "a pale comparison to the original Oreo cookie."

The limited edition variant will be sold for roughly $4.49 each, and will be available for six to eight weeks following its release, or until the supply lasts.
