On Tuesday night, the President of the United States will address the nation in his State of the Union speech. The topics of the President’s speech, however, are no mystery.
Recently, the President has been touring the country and giving speeches about national issues such as government investment in Internet. Most believe that the President will discuss further topics such as increased taxes for the upper class, the situation with Muslim extremism, and more affordable government services.
President Obama is expected to promote a tax increase on the upper class from 23.8 percent to 28 percent. This increase, accompanied with taxes on financial companies, will add up to an estimated $320 billion over the next ten years. The past six years have seen an economic increase. A higher percentage of people have jobs, and the United States has one of the most powerful economies in the world.
With two years left in office, President Obama hopes to impact the nation beyond his term. Though the Democratic Party agrees with Obama’s desire to raise taxes on the upper class, Republicans hold a majority in Congress. Obama’s State of the Union is an important opportunity for the President to promote such ideas; chances to hold the attention of millions of the nation’s citizens at once are rare, and may not occur again for the President.
Besides the economy, issues such as Islamic extremism and militant groups will be addressed. Many expect Obama to speak on the attacks in France, which saw the deaths of 17 Parisians. Though many world leaders gathered at the protest march against terrorism in Paris after the attack, the United States did not send a representative. The President will also discuss his plans for increased communication and relations with Cuba.
The first lady’s box will have guests from various backgrounds for tonight’s State of the Union. An illegal immigrant, union workers, and a government aid worker who was also a former Cuban prisoner are among the guests.
