The Rainbow at Black Mountain

Opinion

It started with the airport. As I arrived at Ashville, North Carolina, it felt at the very least cozy, if not completely reverent.READ MORE

The Mothers of Women’s Discipleship Training

Opinion

During this third year of discipleship training, I had the privilege of serving in the women’s class. As a senior pastor, it is customary to serve the men’s group so serving the women was a bit of an exception.READ MORE

A Shoe Musing

Opinion

They say that when a tiger dies it leaves its leather, but when a people die they leave a legacy (their name). I regard that as the remnant of a life well lived. The reason why there is such an emptiness when a person passes away is precisely because of that remnant of a life well lived. When I think about our congregants that passed on before us, I still fully miss them as their legacy is left behind and remembered.READ MORE

Using Warm Language

Opinion

I heard there is a temperature in our language. In Ki Ju Lee’s book, The Temperature of Language, there is a story of a doctor who is taking care of patients. When addressing them, the doctor does not call them by saying, ‘patient’ or ‘sir’ to address the elderly. Rather, the doctor says, ‘Chief Kim’ or ‘Madame Park’. READ MORE

Dive Into Missions

Opinion

If I were to ask those that lived in the golden age of the Gospel message what true virtue was, the majority would say evangelizing. The motto of ‘Pray when together, evangelize when dispersed’ is still freshly beating against my eardrum, but I cannot help but feel that a sense of complacency exists as these aggressive terminologies get replaced by passive ones.READ MORE

The Sweetness of Family

Opinion

While visiting Korea, I had a fond reunion with my grandmother, one hundred and three years young, after nearly ten years of not seeing her. I usually visit Korea once or twice a year, but being busily engaged I always had no time to see her. This time I was able to visit her at the hospital for the elderly with my mother.READ MORE

Missing the Warmth

Opinion

While living in the States, one of the things I've missed most are the heated floors (ondol) often found in Korean homes. Especially when it’s chilly or cold, I recollect the times in my youth where I would roll around on the warmest place of the floor.READ MORE

A 'One Inch,' Quarter Million Dollar Loss

Opinion

Last week, there was an incident at a golf tournament in which the gallery noticed and reported in the third round a 22-year-old pro golfer named Lexi Thompson placing the marker for her ball 1 inch closer toward the direction of the hole with two feet remaining in her sealed victory at the ANA Inspiration LPGA major tournament, resulting in a four stroke penalty while simultaneously costing her the tournament.READ MORE

A Different Standard of Occupational Satisfaction

Opinion

I know a pastor who lost his wife a year and a half ago due to medical malpractices. He serves with me on the missional board of directors. Being a man of such few words and considering that I had not known him very long, I was not sure what to say to console him. However in the midst of that, I was thankful that he shared his pains and began his arduous recovery process. READ MORE

Strategic Patience

Opinion

Newly minted Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, upon visiting South Korea, said in a press interview, “…the policies of strategic patience have ended.” It was a stern warning that the U.S. will no longer tolerate North Korea’s threatening acts, and that they will pay them back in full. Previously, during the days of the ‘Sunshine Policy’, there was a time when patience never ceased. READ MORE

Weep for Korea, Our Homeland

Opinion

On March 10, eight justices from the Supreme Court of Korea unanimously voted for the unprecedented impeachment of President Geun-Hye Park. Among the five grounds for impeachment introduced by the National Assembly, the violation of sovereign power and the constitution was enough to determine her impeachment.READ MORE

Freedom in Relief

Opinion

They say that the rain from this rainy season completely relieved Southern California's long standing drought. It has been 12 years since I came to this region, and I have never seen it rain so hard.READ MORE

Being Alone Versus Together

Opinion

Being 'alone' has taken the reins of an emerging new cultural shift. I recently read an article which commented on the aesthetics of 'alone culture' by illustrating that there are those who eat alone in a restaurant, drink alone at a bar, play alone, sing alone, do make-up alone instead of at a beauty salon, and camp alone, among other things.READ MORE

Changing from a Snobbish Face, to a Shining One

Opinion

As I am not able to hide my age any longer, I dye the snow-white hairs underneath my ears. The compliments of "You haven't changed a bit!" used to be meaningless to me, but now holds credence over my life.READ MORE

God Calls Us by Name

Opinion

The mission center supported by our church and organized by our Cambodian missionary, Esther, almost resembles a zoo. A while back, our church staff and our families visited a zoo, but it was still incomparable with the front yard of that mission center. READ MORE
