While Lily James remains in a period setting due to her role as Lady Rose in ‘Downton Abbey,’ the actress is set to reunite with Richard Madden with whom she was partnered in Disney’s live-action film, ‘Cinderella.’
Now, the former co-stars will once again get together for the latest version of ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ which will play at London's Garrick Theater next year.
While there have been limited details disclosed to the public, it is expected that the production will closely follow the Bard's original script and plot.
This new version of Shakespeare’s famous love story has graced the headlines following reports of James’ preparations for the premiere of her zombie action film, ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,’ as well as a ‘Downton Abbey’ comeback on Christmas.
The show has been scheduled to be broadcast live in cinemas around the UK and in other countries on July 7, as confirmed by the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company.
‘Romeo & Juliet’ also reunites the onscreen lovers with director Kenneth Brannagh, who helmed ‘Cinderella’ and made it possible for the blockbuster movie to rake in $542 million in the global box office, becoming Branagh's highest-grossing movie to date and receiving mainly positive reviews.
"When I told people that I was perhaps going to do the film [Cinderella], I got a tremendous reaction from lots of parents and a great variety of children that made me feel the story was very personal to people, whatever they’re age,” Branagh said.
James previously shared her sentiments about how the film adaptation closely followed the original story and how it made her excited to take on the role of Cinderella.
“When I read the script, I was bowled over by how it was a faithful retelling of the fairy-tale without any tricks or twists. It felt really strong and [she was] a girl I wanted to be, and felt inspired to play,” she explained.
The 25-year-old actress also confirmed that she is set to make a special appearance in the final episode of ‘Downton Abbey.’
“It was amazing going back after a break," she said, referring to her comeback on the show. "You are just totally re-inspired by the wonder of it, that grand house against grey skies and all the friends you haven’t seen in so long."
As for the upcoming play, ‘Romeo & Juliet’ will play from May 12 to August 13 at London’s Garrick Theater next year.
