Sony has finally pushed out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for its older devices from the Xperia line.

Based on the latest roll out, the update for the latest version of the Lollipop platform is now available for 2013's Xperia Z Wi-Fi, Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR devices.

As noted by Neurogadget, since the devices were already running on version 5.0.2 prior to the arrival of the firmware upgrade, update 5.1.1 only comes with minor features. It mainly comes with bug fixes that are designed to improve the devices' battery capacities and to solve their memory leak issues.

It also comes with other features that enhance the overall user interface experience.

However, despite featuring bug fixes, the latest Lollipop update does not come with a patch against the Stagefright hack. According to the security experts who discovered this issue, cyber attackers can use and exploit Android's media playback tool to hack into the handsets of their potential victims using a text message.

However, since the update does not feature a patch, it would be best for users to avoid opening text messages from unknown individuals.

The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is currently being rolled out in stages which means not all users of the mentioned models will receive it at the same time. Some users, however, can expect to receive a notification regarding the update's availability. Opening the notification will prompt the on-screen instructions and commands for the update's download and installation processes.

Those who haven't received it yet can expect to see a notification regarding the update within the next few days.

According to a report by the Venture Capital Post, the devices that are next in line to receive the same update are Sony's Xperia M2, M2 Dual and M2 Aqua handsets. The update for these devices is expected to feature an option that will allow users to integrate LinkedIn with their contacts and calendar.

It will also improve the devices' background operations as well as enhanced quick settings menu for the Wi-Fi connectivity.

It is not yet clear when the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update will arrive for the Xperia M2 lineup but owners of this handset model can probably expect to hear more about it within the next few weeks.

As for the other devices from the Xperia series, recent rumors suggest that the Xperia Z1, Z2 and the LTE variant of the Xperia Z will not receive the latest Lollipop update. Instead, these will be upgraded to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow directly.
