J.K. Rowling announced the making of a Harry Potter play on Friday, June 26 on her official Twitter account on Friday, June 26. The best-selling author decided to share the good news on the 18th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ premieres in London, England at the Palace Theatre in Summer 2016. Tickets will be made available for purchase at www.HarryPotterThePlayLondon.com in Fall 2015.

“Today is a very special day for two reasons. Firstly, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in the UK 18 years ago! I'm also very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year,” tweeted Rowling on Friday. “It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself.”

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ will not be a prequel to the existing Harry Potter series and it will not be a musical. Rowling said that it “will be real treat for fans.” She said that she is confident that audiences will understand why the story was adapted into a play instead of another book and that when they see it “they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story.”

The play will be directed by John Tiffany. Movement will be directed by Steven Hogget. Set designs are by Christine Jones and costumes are designed by Katrina Lindsay. The play will feature music by British recording artist Imogen Heap. Sound will be coordinated by Gareth Fry and special effects will be created by Jeremy Chernick. Its production companies are Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender’s Playground Entertainment and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.
