The OnePlus One was considered as one of the most popular smartphones when it was announced one year ago. Its immense popularity was due to its flagship-caliber specs paired with an affordable price tag.

With a 5-inch display with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, 2GB RAM, Snapdragon 810 chipset, and 13MP camera, the device was priced less than $400, which is almost half the price of similarly-spec'd flagship models from Samsung, Sony and HTC.

Unfortunately for the startup manufacturer, it chose a strange release and purchase option that paved the way for the OP One's early demise. One year later and it looks like OnePlus will be making the same mistake again.

According to a report by Venture Capital Post, the successor of the OnePlus One could be using the same release scheme - the invite-only system. In the report, the Android phone maker may be looking for another invite-only release for the smartphone because it allegedly generates more interest from the market.

Another report from Ecumenical News stated that the interest for the OnePus Two could be 'intensified' with this type of program. However, it also explained that while such a sales program might have worked for the company last year, its implementation was not good.

As a result, the OnePlus One barely reached its target sales last year, amounting to just over 500,000 units sold by November 2014.

In addition the same strategy will not have the same effect as it did last year. Today, OnePlus has become more popular with the release of its smartphone in several markets in Asia. This means the strategy of not selling the device right away to eager customers might backfire once more.

Based on previous rumors, the OnePlus Two will boast more impressive specs than the OP One, while keeping costs low. Some of the alleged specs include a 5 or 5.5-inch display with QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution, 3GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 810 chipset, and an improved 16MP primary camera, probably with OIS (optical image stabilzation).

The device will also run on a number of mobile operating systems, particularly the new Oxygen OS, and development support for Sailfish OS from Jolla.

As for Cyanogen, there are still no reports that it would run on the next generation OnePlus Two models. Last year, the Android OS developer partnered with Micromax in India, a tough competitor of OnePlus in the Asian country.

Despite rumors of a split, the new CyanogenMod 12 OS will be available to both the OnePlus One, and Yureka from Micromax.
