The Well Mission, a Korean ministry based in south Los Angeles, gave the gift of bicycles to its congregants on December 27 with the new year just around the corner. The Well Mission has been serving the Los Angeles downtown community, and particularly the southern Los Angeles area, in which the majority of the residents are African American. With the help of volunteers from other churches, the Well Mission has been holding worship services every Saturday for the residents of South LA.
The Well Mission wondered what gift would be best for its low-income congregants, and decided to give bicycles. With the help of Shin-Wook Kang, M.D., and 11 churches, including LA Korean United Methodist Church, Living Water Mission Church, Good Community Church of Torrance, Rejoicing Presbyterian Church of Southern California, Sung Kwang Presbyterian Church, LA Hope Church, and West Presbyterian Church of America, 20 bicycles were purchased, and 10 used bicycles were donated as well.
The organization prioritized those who had perfect attendance to their Saturday worship services, which took place eight times this year. Currently, the Well Mission has been holding its worship services with about 40 people, including those who started attending recently and those who have been attending for more than seven years, in a church sanctuary located on the intersection of Western Avenue and 42nd Street.
Joo-Ok Na, the president of the Well Mission, expressed her gratitude towards those who helped in the gift-giving effort.
“We couldn’t have been able to give these gifts without the help of the local churches," she said.
Other than the Saturday worship services for South LA residents, the Well Mission also participates in serving the homeless, taking in young boys and girls in a foster home program, and visiting Tijuana, Mexico for mission work.
