Shortly after the crowdfunding campaign for the sequel to "Psychonauts" ended, director Tim Schafer held an online question and answer session with fans of the budding game series.

According to the director, the story of the upcoming "Psychonauts 2" will take place immediately after the events of the first game, Cinemablend reported.

The first "Psychonauts" game came out in 2005 for the PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2 platforms. It centers on a young boy named Raz who has psychic abilities. The game then follows Raz as he tries to uncover the truth behind the training facility of the Psychonauts, a secret organization of spies with the same supernatural powers.

Almost 10 years after the release of the first game, development studio Double Fine Productions kicked off a crowdfunding campaign for the sequel. This was held through the newly established platform called Fig, which gives project backers the chance to earn from potential revenues through their investments.

Earlier this week, the campaign for "Psychonauts 2" officially ended after successfully exceeding its funding goal of $3.3 million. The project earned a total of $3,829,024 through the help of its investors, Gamespot has learned.

As part of the studio's celebrations for the success of the campaign, director Schafer held a Reddit AMA session to update fans of the series on the content of the game.

According to Schafer, "Psychonauts 2" will take place directly after the first game. He noted that in the sequel, the main character will finally be able to visit the headquarters of the spy organization. On his first day, he will take on a mission related to the disappearance of Truman Zanotto, the head of the Psychonauts who was kidnapped during the end of the first game.

"In 'Psychonauts 2,' Raz will finally get to go to Psychonauts headquarters - his lifelong dream," Schafer posted. "There he can see Sasha and Milla in their natural environment - international espionage."

"While Truman Zanotto was missing, several changes to the direction of the organization were made by his second in command," he added. "Raz soon uncovers sinister things at work in the shadows of the Psychonauts headquarters, including double agents and evils of the past."

"Psychonauts 2" does not yet have an official release date. But since Double Fine Productions had just wrapped up its campaign, development of the game was only recently started and could take some time before it comes out. According to the company, they are targeting to launch it in 2018 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux platforms.
