Exciting things are up ahead for the characters of Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) in the December 17 episode of "The Big Bang Theory" season 9.

Despite their heartbreaking split during the season 8 finale, not to mention the many bumps their relationship encountered during the first few episodes of the new season, producers are teasing that they will actually be taking their relationship to a whole new level soon. And no, it's not yet marriage.

"After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship, and we're so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes," executive producer Steve Molaro said in a statement shared with Fox News.

The ShAmy tandem went on quite the rollercoaster when season 9 started. Amy asked Sheldon for some time to think. But Sheldon being Sheldon refused to give her anything but time, and so pursued her relentlessly until Amy blew up and finally decided that breaking up is the best way to go.

When Sheldon's roommate Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and his wife (Kaley Cuoco) discovered that Sheldon actually has an engagement ring for Amy by accident, Sheldon decided that it's about time he propose to her and see if she's willing to get back together with him. However, when he got to Amy's apartment, Sheldon saw that she just came from a date with someone else and so diverted his plan.

Sheldon thought it would be a good idea for him to date other women as well, but he was highly unsuccessful in that department. Even after Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg) helped him find a suitable match in Craigslist, Sheldon still turned the woman down simply because she was late in fulfilling their challenge.

Meanwhile, Amy almost found a suitable guy, but he was more impressed with her ex boyfriend's credentials than he was truly getting to know her, so that relationship went nowhere as well.

It is unclear whether or not Sheldon and Amy will rekindle their romance after finally jumping the gun to "consummate their relationship," but a lot of "The Big Bang Theory" fans are still hoping they would.

Even Parsons himself wishes that his character would get back together with Amy, and said during an earlier interview that it would be ideal if the two were married.

"The Big Bang Theory" airs every Thursday on CBS.
