Samsung's latest line of smartwatches will officially go on sale starting on October 2.

These include the standard or sporty edition of the Gear S2 and its Classic counterpart.

The basic Samsung Gear S2 can be purchased for $299 while the premium version will have a retail price of $349. Both can be ordered directly from Samsung or through major retailers such as Amazon, Macy's and Best Buy later this week, PC World reported.

The Gear S2 is Samsung first smartwatch model to sport a round display, like the one found on the Moto 360 from Motorola and LG's Watch Urbane and Android Wear. Although the design change from rectangular to circular may seem minor, it boosts the smartwatch's appearance by giving it a more traditional or classic timepiece look.

Like its predecessors, namely the Galaxy Gear and Samsung Gear 2, the Gear S2 also runs on the company's own Tizen operating system. But, it is still compatible with smartphones with at least 1.5GB of RAM and running on Android 4.4. KitKat or higher versions.

If paired with a Samsung handset, Gear S2 users will be able to access the South Korean company's various mobile services such as Samsung Pay.

As for its features, the Gear S2 sports a 1.2-inch AMOLED screen and packs 512MB of RAM. It is powered by a dual-core processor and offers support for NFC, Wi-Fi and wireless charging. According to Droid Life, the wearable device has a battery capacity that can last up to two to three days on a single full charge.

It also comes pre-installed with various apps such as Yelp, Samsung Milk Music, Nike+ Running, Bloomberg, CNN and ESPN.

The device's screen comes with touch screen support which means users will be able to navigate through the contents of the Gear S2 by easily swiping up or down on the display. But aside from this, the smartwatch also features a rotating bezel, according to The Verge. This feature makes it easier for users to use the device since relying on the touch screen function of a smartwatch can be a bit frustrating and tricky due to its small display.

As noted by Android Central, the Gear S2's rotating bezel makes the device more appealing than the Apple Watch since the latter's digital crown only comes with zoom functions. And, with the huge price difference, the Gear S2 is certainly for those who are looking for a practical and high-tech budget-friendly accessory.
