Louis, Jessica, Eddie, Emery, and Evan embarked on an impromptu family vacation via minivan on the season premiere of ‘Fresh Off the Boat.’ Season 2 Episode 1, “Family Business Trip” aired on Tuesday, Sept. 22 on ABC. ‘FOTB’ centers on the Huangs, a Chinese-American family. In Season 1, the Huangs navigated through the initial culture shock of moving from Chinatown in Washington, D.C. to the suburbs in Orlando, Florida.

In “Family Business Trip,” Louis failed in his attempt to pry himself loose from his family in exchange for a short vacation with his buddies. Jessica, his ever-attentive wife and micro-manager of the Huang household turned the “business trip” into a family road trip to Gator World. The Huangs cozied up in their minivan and stayed at a motel nearby the amusement park in Spring 1995.

Eddie, the oldest of three sons purchased a brand-new pair of Reebok Pumps to ensure his coolness upon beginning eighth grade at Abraham Lincoln Middle School. While the rest of his friends were in a frenzy all summer, on how to gain cool points prior to the next school year, Eddie slacked off. His plan shattered when it was announced that basketball player John Stockton was spotted donning the same Pumps. “Give those to your dad or your white neighbor, ‘cause they’re over,” stated an announcer.

Eddie decided to racked up cool points by riding a fierce rollercoaster called Death Roll at Gator World. He chickened out and felt like a failure. Things began looking up when Eddie learned that the love of his life and neighbor, Nicole was repeating the eighth grade.

Evan, the baby of the family had an existential crisis as his identity was pried away from him. Evan lost his last baby tooth and his mom told him that he had to transition from wearing shoes with velcro to big boy shoes with laces. “Every step we take in our non-Velcro shoes is another step toward the grave,” lamented Evan, as he anguished over the loss of his “Baby Evan” brand.

Tiger mom Jessica gave Evan one final chance to be Baby Evan again when the hotel owner charged the Huangs a ton of hidden fees in the bill. Evan staged a slip and fall at the hotel and used his tooth as a ploy for a broken tooth syndrome. Jessica and Evan used the scheme as leverage for the hotel owner to drop the hidden charges from their bill.
