Regina King took home her first Primetime Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie on Sunday, Sept. 20. King could not hide her shock, as she made her way to the stage. Taraji P. Henson greeted King with a long embrace. King won for her outstanding role as Aliyah Shadeed in the 2015 ABC television series 'American Crime.'
King's mouth gaped open as Henson announced her name as the recipient of the 2015 Emmy for her winning role in 'American Crime.' King's character Aliyah Shadeed was a woman named Doreen Nix who converted to Islam. 'American Crime' is an anthology crime drama series.
Henson welcomed a happy, but shocked King to the stage as she handed the golden statue to King. Henson let out a big "yay!" and encouraged the attendees to clap loudly to congratulate King.
“I shoulda brought one of those papers that all of those comedy people had. I was not expecting this, so I’m just going to listen to God and just give gratitude for all the love that surrounds me,” said 44-year-old King.
Five other nominees for the award were Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bate, Mo'Nique, and Zoe Kazan. It is King's first Emmy Award and nomination.
The actress began her acting career in '227,' an American comedy series. The show ran for five seasons and had a total of 116 episodes in the early '90s. King was cast as Brenda Jenkins, a main character in the show, which revolved around a family that lived in Washington, D.C.
