New rumors suggest that Microsoft's upcoming flagship device, the Lumia 940XL, will come with an iris scanner.

According to various sources, the tech giant will probably depend on the Windows 10'S Windows Hello system to make this feature work on the upcoming device.

News about the Lumia 940XL's alleged security feature was first tipped by famous Twitter leaker, Evan Blass. According to the tipster, who goes by the username evleaks, Microsoft was supposed to include a fingerprint scanner for the device, which was internally codenamed as Cityman, GSM Arena has learned.

But then, for reasons unknown, Microsoft decided to ditch the feature in favor of the more advanced iris scanner.

"Microsoft Cityman skips fingerprint reader, leapfrogs right to iris scanner," Blass tweeted.

Tech news site WMPoweruser speculated that Microsoft might be planning on utilizing the Windows Hello feature of the recently unveiled Windows 10 to make the iris scanner work for the Lumia 940XL.

According to previous reports, Windows Hello's biometric authentication process will allow users to access their Windows 10-powered devices through facial, fingerprint or iris recognition.

The latest rumors surrounding the Lumia 940XL's iris scanner makes Microsoft the latest company that is reportedly planning on including an advanced biometric-based security feature in its handset. Previously, WhoWired reported that LG is also planning on including the same feature in the G5 after it was revealed that the company has partnered with biometrics tech firm Irience.

As for its other specs, the Lumia 940XL is expected to come with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display. It will also reportedly be powered by a Snapdragon chipset from Qualcomm and will have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded through a microSD card.

The Lumia 940XL is also rumored to be equipped with a 20-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter.

Despite the abundance of information regarding the Lumia 940XL, readers should take note that these are still based on rumors. Microsoft is yet to officially announce the exact specs and features of its upcoming device.
