The open-world sandbox game "Minecraft" has topped YouTube's list of most viewed gaming videos.

This popular game from indie developer Mojang is joined by other high-profile games in the list such as "Grand Theft Auto," "Call of Duty" and "The Sims," PC Mag reported.

The videos related to "Minecraft" on YouTube feature a wide range of content. These include videos from actual gamers who want to show-off their virtual block-based worlds, recreations of real-world destinations and digital renderings of rich landscapes and other sceneries.

According to Ryan Wyatt, the global head of gaming content for YouTube, "Minecraft" not only has the most views on the popular video streaming site, it is also one of the most searched subjects.

"There are over 42 million 'Minecraft' videos in YouTube today," he told the Washington Post. "It's crazy because 'Minecraft' is also the second most searched term on YouTube."

"It's a testament to Mojang understanding the marketing capacity and power of out content creators," Wyatt added.

Holding the second place after "Minecraft" on YouTube's list is the "Grand Theft Auto" game series. This is followed by "League of Legends" and "Call of Duty" in the third and fourth spots. "Garry's Mod" came in fifth place followed by "The Sims."

Closing the list are the games "Five Nights at Freddy's," "Puzzle and Dragons" and "Dota 2."

"Minecraft" was first released by developer Mojang in November of 2011. Created by Markus "Notch" Persson, the game invites players to use their creativity to build structures and even entire worlds using textured virtual cubes.

Due to its open and unique nature, the game has gained a strong cult following among gamers of all ages. It is even being used as an effective teaching tool by some school and as contest platforms organized by government organizations.

The intellectual property of "Minecraft" is currently owned by Microsoft after it acquired Mojang in late 2014.
