In spite all of the bashing and criticisms that Samsung has been receiving for the past several years, it is still among the best electronics manufacturers in the planet.

The Korean company is not only among the pioneers of the Android brand, it also paved the way for screen sizes beyond five inches. When everyone thought the Galaxy Note was a ridiculously-looking handset, Samsung was brave enough to promote it. Now, 5-inch displays are very common, and some people even go beyond that for their needs.

But it looks like the company is moving forward in another direction when it comes to screen technology.

According to a report by Phone Arena, a Samsung official stated that the rise of foldable smartphones may come in 2016.

That's only a year from now.

In the report, the unnamed Samsung executive revealed that mobile phones in the near future would become more compact, and the technology may even achieve the foldable tech that has been in the rumor mill for years.

Currently, Samsung has a number of patents that it can work with, including a foldable smartphone display and a foldable tablet.

In another report two years ago, the Korean manufacturer has already revealed the prototypes of these devices during the Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress events in 2013. Ironically, the report indicated that Samsung may be launching the foldable displays by 2015.

This just means that while Samsung may be among the most innovative tech manufacturers today, it is still buying itself some time in developing the foldable screens, which could pave the way for foldable smartphones.

Last year, the Korean manufacturer launched the first ever smartphone that had a curved portion - the Galaxy Note Edge. This year, it has doubled that feature, placing the curved edge on both sides of the screen in the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Simply put, Samsung is trying its best to revolutionize the way smartphones are used, which in turn would help it earn a lot more money than it is earning today. However, there are no fast-forward buttons when discovering and experimenting on new technologies.

However, in case the Korean manufacturer manages to come up with a foldable display, the next challenge would be a smaller, thinner more compact battery that can power the device for an entire day.
