Popular Android smartphones continue to dominate the market, and GSM Arena recently proved these phones’ worth when it comes to battery life.

Focusing on the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, Nexus 5, and LG G3, these phones had undergone separate tests to monitor the impact of standby, talk time, web browsing and video playback on battery life.

One of the helpful features that were added to the Android Lollipop update is the Project Volta, referring to a range of optimization settings which is expected to ensure improved battery consumption among devices that have been upgraded to Lollipop.

Along with a power-saving mode, the Project Volta also enables developers to indicate the time that their apps should be connected to Wi-Fi or data to aid the device in saving up on battery.

As such, a benchmark test was carried out among four Android smartphones to check the effectiveness of the Project Volta in mobile phones upgraded to Lollipop. Based on the new results, comparisons were made with the phones’ benchmark results when powered by Android KitKat.

All in all, GSM Arena concluded that the Galaxy S5 generated the best results except for web browsing. Huge improvements were demonstrated by the device as compared to its results with the Kitkat update.

When it comes to standby time, the Galaxy S5 boasted an additional 11 hours whereas the HTC One M8 gained a six-hour improvement. In contrast, the LG G3’s battery life was reduced by six hours while the Nexus 5 also dropped by two hours, making the device last for only 38 hours during standby time.

In terms of talk time, the Nexus 5 and the HTC One M8 did poorly with which both phones lost six hours. The LG G3’s battery life was also reduced but only by 16 minutes. The Galaxy S5 showed the greatest improvement by gaining an additional six hours in talk time, thanks to the Lollipop update.

For web browsing, the HTC One M8 was the only satisfactory achiever as the phone obtained additional battery time of almost three hours. The Galaxy S5, Nexus 5 and LG G3 gained minor improvements; the Nexus 5, for instance, only showed a battery life increase of one minute during web browsing.

Finally, the video playback showed that the Galaxy S5 is a superior performer. While the phone did not demonstrate a considerable increase, it retained its battery life as videos were played, showing the same result when it runs Android Kitkat. On the other hand, the battery life of the other three phones was reduced by an hour when running the Lollipop update.
